Matter of Transformation
Prototyping Tea Rituals in Designing for Transformation
Master Course: Matter of Transformation // Nov 2019 – Feb 2020 // Lecturers: prof. dr. ir. Pierre Lévy, prof. dr. ir. Caroline Hummels
Within the course Matter of Transformation, a 1st person perspective was taken to explore the value of an intuitive approach when designing for transformation. This perspective does not try to capture the complexity in the general sense but tries to tackle the particular in the context of daily rituals. In this course I have prototyped four different tea rituals inspired by four different theories. The theoretical frameworks that were used are: Embodied Aesthetics, Sustainable Transition Theory, Transactional Psychology and post phenomenology.
Reflection
This course allowed me to reflect on myself as a designer, and my interest in societal transformations. I have dived into a perspective in which I did not try to make sense of a system in its entirety (which has always been an impossible and frustrating task), but where I tried to make sense of a system from a personal point of view, and this is something that has shaped my perspective in projects later to come.
