Gender Equality in the Mining Industry
Designing a Digital Learning Journey for the Swedish mining Industry - Closing the Gender Gap
Design Research Project at RISE November 2021 – May 2022 // Client: Swedish Mining Innovation // Team: Melinda From, Katarina Pieterzak, Carita Roslund, Martin Törnrös, Gunnar Oledal, Rosa van der Veen
In this project, a digital learning journey was designed to raise awareness about the importance of integrating a norm-critical perspective in the mining industry, and to provide actionable measures for implementing this perspective in grant application processes. The project was developed in collaboration with Swedish Mining Innovation, with the goal to contribute to transforming this male dominated industry into a more inclusive and equal environment.
The project explores what it means to learn, to unlearn, to reflect and to explore, to question yourself and to be open for new experiences. Therefore, this designed learning journey moves away from linear and pre-determined processes, and explores the potential of iterative and non-linear processes. The digital learning journey is designed for exploration and curiousity. It invites users to navigate through content according to their own needs, desires, and previous knowledge. The open navigation allows users to create a unique pathway through the complexity of this issue. Through an algorithm, users are offered different ways forward depending on their previous activities. The digital learning journey creates a unique pathway for every single individual, where users can store reflections, exercises and information to be used later in their processes.
Reflection
This project allowed me to work within a multi-disciplinary team, where I took the role of design lead, navigating the concept development, facilitating workshops, making decisions on the UI and UX execution and collaborating with software engineers in the execution phase of this project. It taught me how to manage and bridge different perspectives and how to work within the boundaries of time, budget and resource allocation.
